Design Competition Winner
Challenge: NEXT is a branding company that takes in clients for various lengths of time and works with them to create a new look. Their company is a collaboration of designers, artists, engineers, business marketing teams and entrepreneurs that come up with innovative solutions that cater specifically to each individual client. They are rapidly expanding and are moving from an old warehouse to a new tenant space with a given plan. They liked the raw feeling in their old location but need a larger, modern and easily reconfigurable space.
Solution: Collaboration, socialization, learning, and focusing are all important aspects that can be drawn together like leaves on a stem to create an interconnected, growing, and dynamic system. This environment leads down to the roots of NEXT’s mission: innovation. This environment is fostered in an open plan with overall access to light. The raw materials and open ceiling all illustrate the roots of the NEXT design process-exciting, messy, and encouraging failure and success alike. It maintains the industrial reference of their origins and displays the bare components that the plant utilizes to function in its complexity. These raw materials are emphasized with newer finishes like bright green accents, stainless steel, and modern carpet tiles. These materials represent the leaves on the plant that facilitate energy, new ideas, and futuristic, forward-thinking solutions. The office becomes a living, functioning space that allows entrepreneurs to collaborate with NEXT and create innovation and future growth.
Software: Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Application
Throughout the space, I created moments of impact for innovation to occur. These moments are formed by visual connections (through the glass walls and open plan), brief and spontaneous transactions (on the central pathway stem), or longer and deliberate interactions (in the spaces branching off of the stem). I provided ample places to meet and discuss within the space, with a variety of seating, materials, and technology to spur inspiration and creativity.
While the open plan fosters a more stimulating environment, it also poses many acoustical and privacy issues. Louder areas including the classroom, videoconference, and studio space as well as quieter areas like the offices and project rooms are treated similarly. Both have glass walls and acoustic ceiling tiles on the ceiling to separate them acoustically but also allow for light transmission and a visual connection. These spaces also have carpet tile flooring to reduce noise since many are connected to the open plan.
