the Dollhouse
Challenge: Choose a retail store and create a boutique with a given floor plan. Be sure to consider branding, display, and individuality throughout the store.
Solution: I chose a local shop in Baltimore, MD called the Dollhouse. This store sells clothes sewn by local designers. Each dress is completely unique and the styles are usually extremely cutting-edge and overly glamorous, with powerful line movement and glittery embellishments. I created the store to reflect the clothing with a modernized rococo interior, since this time period was known for the flashy, decorative style. The displays and overall structure of the store consists of bold line movements (like that in the dresses) while overlaid with rococo decoration. I chose a minimal color palette with an edgy accent light so that attention would be drawn to the displays and intersections of the space. Unlike a typical store where the goal is for the shopper to feel relaxed and at-ease, I wanted the store to make the shopper feel exhilarated and even up-tight, since the clothes are high-fashion and upscale. I placed lots of mirrors and reflective surfaces throughout the space to make the shopper conscious of their poise and presence throughout the space. This store is not about comfort, but about couture and bold fashion.
