Challenge: Two young art collectors are looking for a home in Western New York to display a wide variety of artwork and reside. The plan is given with the two lower floors serving as a gallery space and the third floor as a residence. It should be a trendy, moveable, and versatile space.
Solution: This project is inspired by the artwork chosen to display in the space: prints and sculptures by an upcoming artist of New York named Julien Bouillon. His artwork has prominent line movement and lots of texture, so the concept is to divide the interior with lines and define the spaces with textures. The building is an older row-house, and the industrial ambiance reflects the raw style and medium of the pieces displayed in the gallery. To maintain the integrity of the building’s history, the industrial textures of the original building will be exposed and used to create the atmospheres of specific functions. These materials will contrast the clean lines that divide the space to emphasize the division and purpose of spaces. By allowing visual linear elements to separate the space, it actually encourages less walls and more integrated forms of division. The building will incorporate a sustainable outlook, using energy-star appliances, recycled materials, and an efficient lighting plan. It will include opportunities to educate the occupants on sustainability with interactive experiences and a raw interior to emphasize the minimalist space. An open plan will allow for more interior lighting despite the minimal windows in the space and local vendors will be used for the materials and installations.
