Design Competition Winner
Challenge: Using only three sections and a floor plan, design a pizza shop for a local chain. The new location is in Radford, VA. The client requests that it remain true to the rustic feel of his original brand but also grounded in its location. Provide this in given floor plan with careful consideration to durability and price. Additionally, design a logo for the store.
Solution: The first thing I did in this project was to go photograph Radford, as shown on the top left. The town was very rustic, with a cold climate. I wanted to design the pizza shop as a warm, cozy recluse from the harsh winters to give it a small-town feel. Using all local vendors and low-price materials, I designed this local shop to draw costomers in on cold nights. I lined the walls with brick facade from a local bricking company and used reclaimed lumber from an old barn for bar tables, the order countertop, and accent walls. I added an accent wall for local photographers and artists to display their work. The menu is positioned above the order countertop on black chalkboard paint since they frequently change the menu. I added additional accents like a warehouse stamp of the Benny Maselli's logo and cage lighting around the windows to create a warm, glowing interior. Another aspect of the competition was to design the new logo for the store. I drew a slice of pizza into the shape of Virginia since their motto is "Home of the Virginia Slice". As the winner of this project, I consulted with the owner of the store and helped with further design development and installations.
